A House Contracts

"I put something down
and it stays there."
His house had expanded
to raise a family, accommodate
grandchildren in school holidays,
and now contracts
to a man months away
from becoming a widower;
adjusting from teamwork
to a solo act where the magic
of putting cup down on a mat
and it remaining in place
is, he tells me, the strangest thing.
